And Hermès created the Carré...History and origin of the most famous silk scarf in the world

From the beginning of the 1930s, Lola Prusac, the stylist who designed the Hermès brand's collection of sportswear and swimsuits, had the idea of creating matching scarves. It was not yet what would become ''le Carré'' but the spirit was there.
Developing this idea and on the occasion of the Centenary of the creation of the Maison Hermès in 1937, Robert Dumas, the Director at the time, entrusted the creation of the first Carré to Hugo Grygkar. Thus was born the mythical "Game of Omnibuses and White Checkers".
Inspired by the tradition of "neckerchiefs" worn by 19th century soldiers and on which there are military motifs, even illustrated instructions, for illiterate fighters, these martial illustrations very fashionable at the end of the war 14-18 will very quickly be supplanted by those evoking the equestrian universe closer to the vocation of Hermès.
Quickly, the themes will evolve towards hunting, fauna and flora, the arts, the Napoleonic epic, the automobile and sport in general, geography and openness to the world and other cultures.
Today, the illustrations are of the most varied. Ranging from the most classic to the most contemporary based on graffiti and typography, they are made by artists from very different artistic worlds.
Since its creation, the Carré Hermès has been produced with more than 2,000 different patterns. Its always fascinating colors are drawn from a color chart that has 75,000 basic colors.
Through its patterns, its dimensions, its choice of type of silk or its technical innovations, the Carré Hermès is constantly evolving while remaining rooted in a tradition of quality, know-how and chic that make it essential and timeless.
