Who doesn't have their "Brides de gala"?
As was the case almost every day, the atmosphere was creative at 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré on that beautiful day in 1957. In Émile Hermès ' former office, Robert Dumas, who had been at the helm of the house since 1951, was working with his partner, Hugo Grygkar , on the design of the brand's next scarf. Suddenly, Robert Dumas, inspired, placed two sumptuous ribbons on the floor, facing each other, and the answer was clear. The composition was perfect, with unparalleled simplicity. The scarf was born!
Before their very eyes, the most famous and iconic of Hermès scarves was born: Brides de gala . With this harness made for Maximilian of Austria, Emperor of Mexico, and drawn from the personal collection of Émile Hermès, Hugo Grygkar also pays homage to the House's beginnings in the carriage industry as a saddler and harness maker.
Since its creation almost 70 years ago, the Brides de Gala scarf has constantly reinvented itself. Many of Hermès' artists have taken the original design and reinterpreted it through its 30 versions . Brides de Gala is also the ideal canvas for all the technical innovations in dyeing, printing, and weaving developed by Hermès artisans, who define it as follows: "It is one of the emblems of the House, and anything is possible. Whatever creative transformations it undergoes, it retains the originality and intensity that make it unique and instantly recognizable."
Here are some of the versions that have adorned this legendary square:
Gala Wash Brides - Hand-washed using an exclusive process, the scarf is transformed. It then becomes machine washable.
Brides de Gala Tattoo - Launched in 2017, this tattoo print features a white design on a monochrome background. The motif then becomes "ghostly," creating a striking contrast. Brides de Gala Tattoo designs are printed on a brocaded silk square with a bee motif.
Gala Brides Love - Sprinkled with small orange or blue hearts and presented in a heart-shaped box, this version was released for Valentine's Day 2017 with a preview at Christmas 2016. Two other exclusive colors were released in 2018 and 2019.
Disordered Gala Brides - Released in 2020 in 70 cm, the original design is deconstructed like a sliding puzzle, thus reinforcing the graphic aspect of the model.
As well as the special edition Brides fleuries , in the "Carrés Précieux" collection.
